Maria graduated from the technical school in the year 1886 with high marks in all the subjects. She studied modern languages and natural sciences in the Regio Institute Tecnio Leonardo da Vinci from 1886 to 1890. When she began her education, Mathematics was her favorite subject. But by the time she passed out of the Regio Institute, she had made up her mind to pursue the medical profession.

Maria's father, Alessandro Montessori, was opposed to her taking to the medical profession. In those days, it was unthinkable for a woman to do a medical course in Italy. Her father vehemently tried to prevent her from joining the medical program. But Maria, strong-willed that she was, could not be dissuaded from joining the course. Her mother, Renilde, supported her in this endeavour.
